Curry’s 35-Point Night Is a Reminder: He’s Not Done Yet

Stephen Curry gave a reminder last night to anyone who needed it: he’s still one of the best players in the league, and unquestionably one of the top point guards ever to play the sport. In just his fifth game back since January, Curry dropped 35 points in 36 minutes, shooting an efficient 7-12 from three. Steve Kerr had even said before this game that Curry would be on a hard minutes limit of 30. 27 of those 35 points came in the second half, including the go-ahead sidestep 30-foot bomb with 50 seconds left to play.

It’s unfortunate how the last two seasons have played out for the Golden State Warriors. Between injuries and roster setbacks, including this year’s losses of Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, along with Curry’s own hamstring issues in last year’s playoffs, the team hasn’t been able to maintain consistency, and some can argue it’s just bad luck.

The Warriors likely aren’t serious contenders this year and might not even make the playoffs, currently sitting as underdogs against the Phoenix Suns for the last spot in the playoffs. But last night was a clear reminder: even with Curry turning 39 next season, his window may be closing, but he’s still playing at an elite level. If Golden State wants to capitalize on what’s left of his prime, they need to go all in and give one of the game’s all-time greats another real shot at a ring. It would be a disservice to the game if they don’t. Despite the win last night, a $100 bet on the Warriors to win the Finals back in October is now worth just $5.
