The MLB futures market cuts both ways, and while some teams have surged, others have burned bettors in a big way early in the season. Three teams in particular stand out as the biggest losers so far.

The New York Mets have taken the biggest hit, with a staggering -59.5% drop in value. A $100 preseason bet to win the World Series is now worth just $38. The Mets have been flat-out disappointing in all areas, that’s the nicest way to put it. They have lost 17 of their last 20 games, which has led them to the worst record in the MLB. It also adds some irony to Juan Soto’s offseason comment last year about choosing the Mets over the Yankees for a better chance to win. Don't ask Frank the Tank his thoughts on this Mets team.

Right behind them are the Houston Astros, down 52.7%. A $100 ticket is now worth $47, showing how far they’ve slipped from their usual contender status. On the surface, it’s surprising they rank 3rd in the league in batting average and have gotten MVP-level production from Yordan Alvarez, who’s hitting .356 with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs. But when you factor in the pitching, it starts to make sense. The Astros rank dead last in team ERA at 6.08 and currently sit at 12-20. You simply can’t win consistently with that kind of production on the mound.

Then there’s the Boston Red Sox, who have dropped 47.4%, turning a $100 bet into just $44. Similar story here, expectations haven’t matched reality, and the market has adjusted quickly. On April 25th, the team made a drastic move by firing Alex Cora in hopes of turning things around. Meanwhile, Roman Anthony has struggled mightily. The second-year player was expected to take a leap and even flirt with MVP conversations, but the 21-year-old is currently hitting just .205 with one home run and five RBIs. They are going to need some production out of him if they want to start winning.
