Growing Concern Surrounds Darryn Peterson After Late Scratch vs. No. 1 Arizona

Darryn Peterson’s questions surrounding his character only grew louder last night. In what was perhaps the biggest game of the season, with the No. 1–ranked Wildcats in town, it was announced just 10 minutes before tipoff that Peterson would be out with “flu-like symptoms.” Peterson was shown on the court working out before the game, where he didn’t look in awful shape.

In the Big 12, teams are required to submit an injury or illness report on game day, and Peterson was not listed. To make matters worse, a video surfaced of an ESPN official stats crew worker sitting courtside, texting about the situation. The message said “So he's sick and he didn’t tell anyone in practice, and Bill said don’t half a** it if you're gonna play, if not sit. DP pretty much said screw it, I’m out.”

Situations like this have followed him throughout the season. While there’s no way to confirm the full truth of what happened, based on his negative track record, it wouldn’t shock me. Peterson being ruled out shifted the betting line two full points from Arizona -2.5 to -4.5, but it ultimately didn’t matter. Kansas rallied without him and handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

The loss last night revealed a more vulnerable side to the market, with FanDuel notably shifting Arizona's odds from +420 to +550 to win the National Championship.

There’s no question Peterson has the talent to be the No. 1 overall pick. However, at this stage, concerns about his mental toughness and overall drive to play basketball could begin to impact how teams evaluate his draft stock.
