Jamal Adams' comeback with the Minnesota Vikings has come to a devastating end before the regular season even began. The veteran defender suffered a right knee injury during Minnesota's preseason matchup against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, and he will miss the entire 2026 season.

The injury immediately reignited the conversation surrounding the MetLife Stadium turf, which has developed a controversial reputation among NFL players. Adams' injury was non-contact, occurring while he was covering a receiver, making the playing surface an obvious part of the discussion surrounding another serious knee injury at the stadium.

MetLife has been the site of a troubling number of major knee ligament and Achilles injuries. ESPN reported that at least 15 players suffered knee ligament or Achilles tears at MetLife since 2020 including Malik Nabers last year.

The league has pushed back on claims that MetLife's surface is responsible for the injuries, with NFL executive Jeff Miller saying the stadium had one of the league's lower injury rates in 2024. Still, Adams' injury adds another chapter to the ongoing debate over whether NFL players should be playing on artificial turf, particularly when natural grass has become a major player-safety priority across the league.
