Madison Square Garden Witnesses the Greatest Comeback in Finals History

The New York Knicks pulled off the largest comeback in NBA Finals history on Thursday night, erasing a staggering 29-point deficit to stun the San Antonio Spurs and move one step closer to a championship.

The comeback shattered multiple records. The previous largest Finals comeback belonged to the 2008 Celtics, who rallied from 24 points down against the Lakers. The Knicks also overcame a 27-point halftime deficit, the largest halftime deficit ever erased to win a playoff game. The previous mark was held by the 2025 Thunder, who came back from 26 down against the Grizzlies.

As incredible as the comeback was for New York, San Antonio will be left wondering how they let this one slip away. With the Spurs clinging to a late lead, De'Aaron Fox elected to attack the basket for a layup in which he missed rather than pulling the ball out and forcing the Knicks to foul. The decision immediately drew criticism from Charles Barkley, who bluntly called Fox an "idiot" on the broadcast. While harsh, the criticism reflected what many fans were thinking. The Spurs needed to burn the clock, and the quick shot gave New York valuable extra possessions. If he did happen to make the layup, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.

The game wasn't without mistakes from the Knicks either. Josh Hart missed a completely uncontested fast-break layup that appeared certain to cost New York. Later, he failed to box out Stephon Castle on a crucial possession, allowing the Spurs guard to create a second-chance opportunity and regain the lead. In most games, those two mistakes would dominate the postgame conversation, but not last night.

Instead, the final moments belonged to OG Anunoby. With the Knicks desperately needing one final play, Anunoby came flying through with the game-winning tip-in on a Jalen Brunson miss. Successfully completing one of the most improbable comebacks in NBA history and sending Madison Square Garden into a frenzy. The Knicks were far from perfect, but when the game was on the line, they found a way. Now, what looked like a series that was about to slip away, with the Knicks potentially heading back to San Antonio tied 2-2, has completely flipped. Instead of fighting to regain control, New York now holds a commanding 3-1 series lead and sits just one win away from its first NBA championship in decades.
