France's impressive World Cup run came to a frustrating end after a 2-0 loss to Spain, and Kylian Mbappé's postgame comments suggested he wasn't just disappointed with the players on the field.

Spain once again proved to be France's kryptonite, defeating Les Bleus for the third consecutive meeting. Led by midfield maestro Rodri, the defending European champions completely controlled the tempo of the match, neutralizing a French side that had looked dominant through its first six matches in North America.

Rodri and Fabián Ruiz dictated play from start to finish, leaving France chasing the game for long stretches. Afterward, Mbappé pointed directly to Spain's dominance in midfield—and appeared to question France's tactical approach. "We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that's hard," Mbappé said after the match. "Fabian and Rodri had plenty of time to play. There was a lack of communication on the press. I think we should have done man-to-man press and force them to run with us."

Mbappé continued by acknowledging Spain's superiority in the gameplan department. "Because they are better than us at controlling a game. We didn't manage to do it. We were too sloppy technically. We could not hurt them when we could have."

While Mbappé never directly criticized manager Didier Deschamps, his comments appeared to question France's tactical setup, particularly the pressing scheme. His suggestion that France "should have" pressed man-to-man instead of allowing Spain's midfield time and space could be interpreted as criticism of the game plan rather than simply the players' execution.

Spain capitalized on every weakness, controlling possession and frustrating France throughout the match. After cruising through the tournament's opening six games, France looked second-best when it mattered most. With another disappointing exit against Spain, questions will now turn to whether tactical changes are needed moving forward, and whether Mbappé's postgame comments signal growing frustration with the direction of the national team under Deschamps.
