The WagerWire Live team was fortunate to have Melva Thompson-Robinson on a live show this past weekend, to get some tremendous insight into the draft process that her son, Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been going through. The interview is extremely insightful, and absolutely worth a listen on the WagerWire Spotify page.
After 4-star studded years at UCLA, Dorian enters the draft with some buzz, but also fairly under the radar for a guy who experienced so much winning in college. DTR returned UCLA to a winning program under Chip Kelly, and showed prowess as a runner and passer during his time in the PAC 12. In today’s NFL, where the best QBs are effective with their legs as well as arms, there are several teams that would be fortunate to get this guy on their roster as he develops into a future star in the league.
In the interview, Melva discusses the draft process that she and her son are going through for the first time. Despite that, Dorian played with many current pros in both high school and college, thus the two of them were able to prepare themselves well. With that said, traveling from San Franscisco to Philadelphia to New Orleans for visits all in the span of one week has proven to be a whirlwind. Thankfully for Melva, those visits have come to an end this week, and DTR can get back to working on his game.
Melva touches on DTR’s combine experience, and how crucial it has been for her son to work with the right agent who is in tune with teams about critiques and what areas need additional work. Melva knows her son will continue to improve and address anything that may have been brought up.
Despite many early detractors, DTR is projected 100% to get drafted, to no surprise of his mother. Melva attributed some of the early hate to a lack of Pac 12 viewership due to games kicking off so late on Saturday nights. Following numerous visits, the combine, UCLA’s pro day, and a great performance at the East West Shrine game, Melva is confident that her son is peaking at the right time. After watching the tape, it is hard to disagree with her.
