The New York Knicks suffered their first loss in 46 days on Monday night, falling 115-111 to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. But after the game, much of the attention shifted away from the action on the court and toward Knicks head coach Mike Brown's comments about the officiating.
Brown was furious with the free-throw disparity, particularly in the second half where the Spurs attempted 24 free throws compared to just eight for New York. "I never thought I'd see that in an NBA Finals game," Brown said following the loss. He acknowledged that the Spurs played well but argued that the discrepancy made it much harder for the Knicks to win.
The frustration is understandable there were a lot of calls that benefited the Spurs. The Knicks spent much of the fourth quarter battling foul trouble while San Antonio repeatedly got to the line. Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle took advantage, helping the Spurs erase New York's hopes of taking a commanding 3-0 series lead.
Whether Brown is right or simply trying to put pressure on the officials ahead of Game 4 is up for debate. Critics have pointed to the Knicks' turnovers and offensive struggles as the bigger reason for the loss, while Brown believes the whistle played a major role. Either way, his message was clear: if New York is going to regain control of the series, he wants what he considers a more balanced game called by the officials.
