The timing couldn't be better. More than 60 million Americans played fantasy football in 2025, surpassing the estimated 48.1 million people who played golf, highlighting just how deeply fantasy football has become embedded in American sports culture.
The idea behind the event comes from fantasy sports pioneers Rick Wolf and Ed Bunnell, who spent a combined 60 years helping build the fantasy sports industry from the inside at CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Sports Illustrated, FOX, EA Sports, Fantasy Alarm, and more. Official recognition didn't come easy. The National Day Calendar reviews nearly 30,000 holiday applications annually, yet only 30 to 40 are approved each year. After a rigorous application process and formal interview, National Fantasy Football Draft Day earned its place on the calendar, further cementing fantasy football's status as one of America's most beloved sports traditions.
