The 2026 World Cup will conclude with a matchup that feels almost perfectly scripted.

Defending champion Argentina will face European champion Spain on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium. Argentina is attempting to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups, while Spain is chasing its second title and first since 2010.

At the center of the final are Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, two generations of Barcelona greatness whose connection began long before either could have imagined sharing the field in a World Cup final.

The Photo That Came Full Circle

In 2007, a 20-year-old Messi participated in a charity photoshoot at Camp Nou and was photographed bathing a baby as part of a UNICEF campaign. That baby was Yamal, who would eventually rise through Barcelona’s academy and become the centerpiece of Spain’s next generation.

Now, Messi will attempt to lift another World Cup trophy while Yamal tries to defeat the player who once held him as a baby. What began as a random photoshoot has become one of the most remarkable full-circle stories in soccer history.

The Stars Driving Argentina

Messi has not simply been a ceremonial leader during Argentina’s title defense. He has arguably been the best player in the tournament.

The Argentine captain enters the final with eight goals and four assists. He is tied with Kylian Mbappé for the Golden Boot lead but holds the tiebreaker because he has recorded one more assist. Messi did not score in Argentina’s semifinal victory over England, but he created both late goals as Argentina overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1.

Julián Álvarez has provided another major scoring threat alongside him, reaching five goals during Argentina’s run. His movement gives Messi space to drop deeper, receive the ball and attack a defense from multiple angles. Lautaro Martínez has also provided timely production from the bench, including the late winner against England.

Argentina has scored a tournament-high 19 goals and won all seven of its matches. That production makes Lionel Scaloni’s team extremely difficult to defend because Argentina does not need Messi to finish every opportunity. He can control the game as a scorer, creator or decoy.

Spain’s Complete Tournament

Argentina has featured the tournament’s most productive attack, but Spain has been the competition’s most balanced team.

Spain has conceded only one goal in seven matches and has recorded six shutout victories, including its commanding 2-0 semifinal win over France. A French attack featuring Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise was unable to consistently break through Spain’s structure.

Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain with five goals and one assist, giving the team a reliable finisher at the front of its formation. Yamal’s numbers may not match Messi’s scoring totals, but his ability to carry the ball, isolate defenders and create opportunities from the right wing has been essential. He drew the penalty that opened the scoring against France and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Rodri remains the player who makes everything work. Through seven appearances, he has completed nearly 93% of his passes while recording 794 touches and 655 accurate passes. His ability to dictate the tempo allows Spain to control possession without becoming passive. Pedri and Dani Olmo can then operate higher up the field, searching for space between Argentina’s midfield and defensive lines.

How the Matchup Could Be Decided

Spain will try to control possession through Rodri and create one-on-one opportunities for Yamal. Argentina will likely defend compactly before attacking quickly through Messi and Álvarez.

The key battle will be in midfield. Spain must limit Messi without losing its shape, while Argentina must prevent Rodri from controlling the tempo.

Could Wildfire Smoke Affect the Final?

WagerWire

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has created hazy conditions and air-quality concerns across New York and New Jersey.

Conditions are expected to improve before kickoff, but what happens if the smoke lingers? Poor air quality and heat could make it harder for both teams to press and maintain their intensity for 90 minutes.

Odds and Betting Outlook

WagerWire

Spain enters as the betting favorite at approximately -165 to win with Argentina around +120.

There will be no official pick, but the lean is toward Spain. Spain has been the more balanced team and has conceded only once, although betting against Messi in a World Cup final always carries significant risk.

Spain may have the more complete team. Argentina may have the greatest difference-maker the sport has ever seen.
