The Yankees Win Challenges, but Aaron Boone Loses the Game

The MLB challenge system was on full display yesterday for the New York Yankees. Even in a loss, they went a perfect 5-for-5 on at-bat challenges and are now 10-for-11 on the season. That’s a real competitive edge, and it’s encouraging to see them thriving in that area, but it’s also worth noting that this success has little to do with Aaron Boone. If anything, it continues to highlight a familiar theme: the Yankees win on talent, not managerial impact. The Yankees have the 2nd best odds on Fanduel to win the World Series at +1000

That disconnect showed up again with the bullpen. Coming off a day of rest, the Yankees had a fresh group of arms, yet Boone used Camilo Doval for just two pitches in the bottom of the 7th before turning to Paul Blackburn, a pitcher with a 6.23 ERA who has rarely been trusted in high-leverage situations. In a spot where urgency and decision-making matter most, the choices simply didn’t match the moment.

There’s no denying the talent on the New York Yankees roster. For the past few years, they’ve been a top-three team on paper and have the best hitter in the world in Aaron Judge, yet it still hasn’t translated into a World Series title. At some point, the conversation has to move beyond the roster and focus on leadership. The pieces are there, but the results aren’t, and that puts the spotlight directly on Boone.
