The New York Giants have a major situation on their hands under John Harbaugh in year one, and it’s coming from one of the most important spots on their defense. According to reports, Dexter Lawrence no longer wants a contract with the team and is pushing to be traded, with talks now considered beyond repair. “If Dexter had his wish, he will not suit up for the Giants again,” per @NYPost_Schwartz.
Lawrence simply didn’t perform at the level expected. The Giants’ run defense was one of the worst in the league, allowing 5.3 yards per carry, and for a player who’s supposed to anchor the interior, that’s a major red flag. Despite being double-teamed at one of the highest rates in the league, he has just 0.5 sacks over his last 22 games. Whether it’s scheme, surrounding talent, or his own play, the production hasn’t matched the reputation.

That’s what makes this situation so puzzling. Typically, trade demands come from players coming off dominant seasons, looking to cash in or compete elsewhere. In this case, it’s the opposite, a down year paired with a unit that struggled across the board. From the Giants’ perspective, it’s hard to justify meeting demands or restructuring anything significant given the results. Considering how poorly the defense performed even with him, it may actually be in their best interest to explore a major trade package and move on to start the new hopeful era of Giants football. Dexter had signed a $90 million extension in May of 2023, If you ask me, this is an awful look for him.
Now the question becomes leverage. If Lawrence is truly done with the organization, the Giants may be forced to act. But with his recent performance they’re not exactly negotiating from a position of strength with his trade value likely being down. It’s a messy situation, one that raises bigger questions about accountability, expectations, and where the franchise goes from here. If a move is coming, it could happen soon with the NFL Draft right around the corner. Early sharp action has leaned toward the New York Giants , as a $100 bet since lines opened on FanDuel is now worth $108.
