Here at WagerWire, we recently had the pleasure of interviewing former Oklahoma Sooner and eight-year NFL veteran Martin Chase about some of the most interesting things about his time as a collegiate and professional football player, as well as many other exciting topics. Chase played at the University of Oklahoma from 1994-98 before being selected in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
Before NFL
Chase is from Lawton, Oklahoma, and was a two-time All-State football player in high school before being recruited by a handful of collegiate football powerhouses including Tennessee, Miami, and Wisconsin before ultimately deciding to stay close to home with the Oklahoma Sooners.
During our interview with Chase, he discussed many of his favorite teammates, coaches, and influences while he was playing at Oklahoma, as well as some of his favorite games and moments during his time there.
To the NFL
After establishing the school’s single-season sack record with a career-high 14 sacks (which is a record that he still currently holds), Chase and a handful of his Sooner teammates would go on to play in the NFL. Although he was drafted by Ravens, Chase is probably best known in the NFL as being a member of “The Heavy Lunch Bunch” with Grady Jackson and Norman Hand while he was with the New Orleans Saints.
Chase also shared some fond memories about his time in the NFL, including his favorite spot to grab a bite when he’s in New Orleans and some of his favorite local foods.
Excitement for OU heading to the SEC
During the interview, Chase also gave his thoughts on a handful of major current events happening in the world of collegiate football, including his thoughts on the Sooner’s move to the SEC and the head coaching transition at Oklahoma from Lincoln Riley to Brent Venerables, as well as the current state of NIL deals.
Beyond just answering questions about his experiences, Chase also mentioned that his Twitter DMs (direct messages) are always open for young athletes who have questions regarding the sport. If you haven’t already checked out this great interview with Mr. Chase, I highly encourage you to take a few moments and give it a listen!
