Things got extremely chippy late in the San Antonio Spurs loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and now a lot of attention is turning toward Victor Wembanyama and what may have been said during garbage time.
With just under two minutes remaining and the Spurs trailing by 16, cameras appeared to catch Wembanyama whispering something to Mason Plumlee and Bismack Biyombo as they checked into the game. Moments later, both big men delivered hard fouls on Jared McCain, immediately escalating tensions on the floor.
After the game, McCain admitted the sequence caught him completely off guard. “Yeah that was crazy, I didn’t expect it,” McCain said. “We were at the free throw line and I was like ‘why’d you do that man’… and he was like ‘I got another one for you too.’”
That quote instantly fueled speculation that the fouls may not have been accidental frustration plays, but rather something more intentional. Given the timing of the game, with the outcome already basically decided, it only added more intrigue to what Wembanyama may have said moments earlier.
Playoff basketball is always physical, especially in a series this emotional, but incidents like this can quickly change the tone of a matchup. The tension between these two teams is clearly rising fast, and it will be interesting to see if San Antonio can force a game 7 against the banged-up Thunder.
