One of the New York Yankees’ most intriguing prospects has officially been called up to the big leagues following multiple injuries to key outfielders like Jasson Domínguez and Giancarlo Stanton. Standing at 6-foot-7, Spencer Jones feels like the definition of a boom-or-bust prospect, and it’ll be fascinating to see whether his game translates at the highest level.

Jones was once viewed as one of the top prospects in baseball, though he now sits as the Yankees’ sixth-ranked prospect. His production in Triple-A has still been impressive, hitting .258 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs, but the glaring concern is the 32.4% strikeout rate. That number has many wondering what happens once he starts facing elite major league pitching on a nightly basis.

Still, the upside is obvious. Because of the size and athletic profile, Jones has drawn plenty of comparisons to Aaron Judge over the years. And statistically, the similarities are closer than many realize. Judge had the lower strikeout rate at around 25%, but Jones trails him by just .006 in batting average and .020 in on-base percentage, while actually holding a .026 edge in slugging percentage and a .006 higher OPS, resulting in the same call-up age of 24.

The challenge starts immediately, as Jones is expected to debut against Jacob Misiorowski the Milwaukee Brewers ace. With the injuries piling up, the Yankees have clearly been aggressive about their prospects because they believe this team can go far in the postseason. The market agrees, on FanDuel, a $100 preseason bet on the Yankees to win the World Series is now worth $186 after the team has exceeded expectations in the beginning part of the season.
